Life is like a duet: you need the right half to make a performance beautiful.
The ostensibly simple story of a sympathetic veteran teacher giving Italian lessons to a weekly class of diverse immigrants is given infinitely more depth and complexity by the manner in which director Daniele Gaglianone renders his story. Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, truth and artifice, and between documentary and drama, Gaglianone has created a film within a film. You see the apparent artifice of Gaglianone’s crew using professionals, including the noted film actor Valerio Mastandrea as the teacher, interlinked with ‘real’ immigrant protagonists, studying the language to improve their chances of employment and of gaining a permanent residence permit. Thus in the course of the lessons there is simultaneously the painful and upsetting relation of the students’ personal stories but also humour, as they interact and share their humanity, bridging cultural differences, united in their striving to make a better life for themselves. The first scene, which contains no dialog, depicts the murder of a young ranger in the snowy peaks. Barnabo is a taciturn young ranger new to the mountains. He is a pacifist and is uncomfortable carrying his rifle. Upon his hand is a stigmata that periodically bleeds. The poachers murder another ranger. This time it is the commanding officer. The rangers organize a patrol to find them, but they are unsuccessful. It is Barnabo who locates them. They escape because he is unable, or afraid to shoot them. He is dishonorably discharged and now finds it hard to escape the label of coward. He leaves the mountains and becomes a farm-hand. While he labors, he reflects upon the experience and those of his life. A internal moral struggle ensues as he tries to make sense of it all and find some inner peace.
Sky, A child between silence and awareness At his nine years of age, Sky must use a hearing aid to barely hear the sounds around him due to a severe hearing impairment. But this limitation does nothing but feed his vibrant curiosity about his surrounding world. Most of the film occurs in the classroom of the school that Sky attends, a place that does not end up being friendly enough due to the bullying or the frustration of not being able to perfectly listen to all his classmates. Director Loes Janssen positions herself from the proximity of Sky's auditory point of view to document our little character in his daily conflict between silence and awareness, a dilemma from which he emerges gracefuly thanks to his unwavering sense of constancy.
