October, 1987. American filmmaker Steven Okazaki is making a documentary about laureated japanese author Kenzaburo Oe, but all goes wrong when he finds out that due to "mistranslated facts" the subject of his film has only one day to spare before leaving the country. During their brief interview, Mr. Kenzaburo affirms that the new generation of japanese artists are "spoiled, un-original and too influenced by Western culture." so, having a japanese film crew rented for four more days, Steven decides to roam the streets of Tokyo filming the lives of the japanese emergent underdog artists, trying to make some sense of Mr. Oe's statement.

Now in Leh, the capital, one finds pollution and divisiveness, inflation and unemployment, intolerance and greed. Centuries of ecological balance and social harmony are under threat from modernisation. The breakdown of Ladakh's culture and environment forces us to re-examine what we really mean by progress - not only in the developing parts of the world, but in the industrialized world as well. After a wild sex session in a brothel on his 40th birthday, Luis, bitter and haughty, tries unsuccessfully to escape from the blood stain that, without explanation, grows on the sheet over the bulge formed by his lover. Desperation and what he finds under the sheet means that the only option is to jump out the window of the room already full of blood. The blow plunges him into a strange dream in which a particular fairy godmother reminds him of the child that she still carries inside and the need to take care of him. Convinced of the teaching, by blowing out the candles on his birthday cake, Luis wishes to become that child. Beneath the sheets, drenched in blood, he discovers the error of his desire.
