In 1900 the young Eduard Penkala arrived in Zagreb, then a town of about 60,000 inhabitants in all. Born of Polish and Czech origins in what is now Slovakia, he soon showed solidarity with his new fellow citizens, due to the political troubles. A chemist by profession, he invented over 80 patents in various fields: from a hot water bottle, a precursor of the vacuum flask and a rotating toothbrush to medicines, detergents, insecticides, a brake system, the first anode battery, a compound for gramophone records and a fountain pen. 45 years before Sir Christopher Cockerell and his hovercraft, he came up with a craft that floated on air, and the principles of the helicopter. Croats were indebted to him for his patriotism, his invention and his construction of the first domestic aircraft, only a few years after the Wright brothers, as well as his role in the industrial development of the country in the early 20th century.

Pretty Bloody: The Women of Horror

Pretty Bloody: The Women of Horror is a television documentary film that premiered on the Canadian cable network Space on February 25, 2009. The hour-long documentary examines the experiences, motivations and impact of the increasing number of women engaged in horror fiction, with producers Donna Davies and Kimberlee McTaggart of Canada's Sorcery Films interviewing actresses, film directors, writers, critics and academics. The documentary was filmed in Toronto, Canada; and in Los Angeles, California and New York City, New York in the US.

Barnabo of the Mountains

The year is 1919 and it's forest rangers versus poachers in the Dolomite mountains in this Italian drama based on a morality tale by Dino Buzzati. The first scene, which contains no dialog, depicts the murder of a young ranger in the snowy peaks. Barnabo is a taciturn young ranger new to the mountains. He is a pacifist and is uncomfortable carrying his rifle. Upon his hand is a stigmata that periodically bleeds. The poachers murder another ranger. This time it is the commanding officer. The rangers organize a patrol to find them, but they are unsuccessful. It is Barnabo who locates them. They escape because he is unable, or afraid to shoot them. He is dishonorably discharged and now finds it hard to escape the label of coward. He leaves the mountains and becomes a farm-hand. While he labors, he reflects upon the experience and those of his life. A internal moral struggle ensues as he tries to make sense of it all and find some inner peace.

FADED PHOTOGRAPH is a documentary in which the filmmaker traces the existence of her father, who died when she was 12, through a montage of his memoirs. From family films shot by her paternal grandfather and her father between 1954 and 1998, and the diaries he wrote during his life, the director tells the story of an ordinary man whose personal memory echoes a collective memory : one of a generation bursting out of Quebec's great darkness in which freedom is also synonym of disorientation. Thus begins a dialogue marked by nostalgia, between joyful videos and tormented writings, which soon becomes universal.
